Equations Competition

On February 8, eleven sixth grade students from Mrs. Wallas’s math class accompanied Mrs. Goswick’s fourth, fifth, and sixth grade gifted students to the Equations Academic Games competition held at Slippery Rock University. Mrs. Wallas’s students prepared for the competition during recess, at after-school practices, and also used any extra time available in math class to play the game. The gifted students all worked on Equations with Mrs. Goswick during their time in the gifted classroom, and some joined the other sixth grade students for additional practice opportunities. A special thanks to Mr. Magliocca and Mr. Herb Guenther who also helped to prepare the students.

Shenango students fared well at the competition. Those who went undefeated in all three rounds of the 5th-6th grade division were Gennaro Leitera, Rachel Callahan, Hunter Roolf, and Maria Bryant. The Shenango team of Kelly Cleaver, Alexa Lyons, Gennaro Leitera, Nikolai Mihaly, and Rachel Callahan also won first place in the 5th-6th grade division at the event. All of the winning students are from Mrs. Goswick’s gifted classroom, and she is very proud of their accomplishment. They are now eligible to compete at the next level of Academic Games (Tri-Bowl) which is held at Grove City College in late February.

Congratulations to the winners, and to all students who represented Shenango Elementary for a job well done!
